Choosing Furniture

When the time comes to choose your furniture, it's best to determine function before form. Perhaps a modern armless sofa would not be the best choice for the TV room if you like to get cozy on the sofa with your favourite blanket and a bowl of popcorn.  Remember to take some measurements if the space you are filling is limited.  It is also a good idea to start with the biggest pieces first (sofas, chairs, cabinets, etc.) and then accent as you go (tables, lamps, etc.).
Once you have determined your function, you are ready to choose your form. Don't be afraid to mix up your style, allow for a more eclectic and versatile look. For example, a square arm sofa with tufted back becomes less trendy when paired with a couple of oversized Louis Bergere chairs.  Whenever possible try to have samples of paint, carpet and a couple pictures of the room with you whenever you start shopping.
Since very few homes are identical it is important to have a good understanding of the styles you already own, and of the styles you prefer.
You must also consider quality and comfort. Before looking for any furniture, design a floor plan to ensure that you choose pieces that are size and scale appropriate for the room.
One of the most important things to remember about the different styles of furniture is that what you like may not be what everyone likes, but it is important to get the look you want for your house. Many people draw from several styles to decorate their home and you can too.  When deciding upon furniture for your home, it is a good idea to have a general game-plan before you ever set foot inside a home furnishings store.
